Stop sign ahead signs give drivers a chance to reduce their speed and keep the community safe. Stop Ahead road signs are frequently used to indicate an upcoming stop sign “that is not visible for a sufficient distance to permit the road user to respond to the device,” according to the MUTCD.

Stop Ahead Specifications

Our stop sign ahead signs are 30" x 30" and made of Engineer-grade Reflective Aluminum for optimal visibility in most conditions. The sign has a .080" thickness and is made from 5052-H38 anodized aluminum to help prevent corrosion. This 3M™ reflective sheeting has become the industry-leading standard for outdoor road signs, which is why we use nothing less for our Stop Ahead symbol signs.

Stop Ahead Sign Purpose

The stop ahead symbol sign is placed in advance of regulatory stop signs to warn drivers of the downstream stop. This sign is considered a W3-1 sign by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). It is in the family of Advance Traffic Control symbol signs along with Yield Ahead signs and Signal Ahead signs.

Even if the primary Stop sign placed beyond the Stop Ahead has satisfactory visibility, it can still be supplemented with a Stop Ahead road sign to help prevent adverse driving conditions.

Our Stop Ahead symbol signs include pre-punched 3/8" mounting holes that are top and bottom centered. This is important so that no additional abrasion occurs due to having to self-punch the 3M™ reflective sheeting with sub-standard tools.

This type of sign is a diamond shape and used the Standard Federal radius on the corners. The sheeting for our Stop Sign Ahead signs is orange and has an ASTM Type I reflectivity type.
